Why we're doing this
One of the privileges of this work is getting to see inside so many classrooms. The picture is the same everywhere. Money is tight, and English and maths teachers carry a heavy marking load.
We know what we've built and we trust it, because we've seen it work in classroom after classroom. So we'll be straight about why we're offering it. First, it will make your mock a little easier this year, and that's the right thing to do. Second, we want you to use it. We think you'll love it, and once you have, you'll understand what Markus is about.
We're FE teachers ourselves. This is our way of giving something back to the sector we come from.

The terms, simply

- One GCSE English Language mock paper, Paper 1 or Paper 2, for every student on your GCSE English programme
- For schools and colleges not currently using Markus
- One place per school or college, or per site within a group or trust
- Papers for AQA, Pearson 2.0 or Eduqas
- Sat between January and March 2027, with scripts uploaded by 31 March 2027
- Places are limited. If we're oversubscribed, places go to a ballot
- No obligation to continue afterwards
Questions
Is it really free?
Yes. No cost, no card details and no obligation to buy anything afterwards. We'll ask for half an hour of your time to review the results together.
What if more schools and colleges apply than there are places?
We hold a ballot, so every eligible school or college has the same chance. We'll tell you either way.
Do students need a device?
No. Students write by hand on paper and can snap a photo of their answer on their own phone. Teachers can also upload for a student, and you'll be able to scan a whole class set of papers in one go.
How accurate is the marking?
Every script is marked three times and standardised, the way a team of human markers would be. Markus scores its own confidence, checks for hallucinations and gives a reason for every mark. Where the marking passes disagree, the script is flagged, and teachers can see the reasoning and change any mark.
Is our students' data safe?
Yes. Markus is EU hosted, GDPR compliant, ICO registered and Cyber Essentials certified. We hold only students' names and email addresses, a Data Processing Agreement is available, and we never train AI on your students' work.
